Monday 7th October

Terms of Endearment
1983

Aurora (Shirley Maclaine) and Emma (Debra Winger) are mother and daughter who march to different drummers. Beginning with Emma’s marriage, Aurora shows how difficult and loving she can be. The movie covers several years of their lives as each finds different reasons to go on living and find joy. Aurora’s interludes with Garrett Breedlove (Jack Nicholson) , retired astronaut and next door neighbour are quite striking. In the end, different people show their love in different ways.

Moulin Rouge
2001

A celebration of love and creative inspiration takes place ion the infamous, gaudy and glamorous Paris nightclub, at the cusp of the 20th Century. A young poet (Ewan McGregor), who is plunged into the heady world of Moulin Rouge, begins a passionate affair with the club’s most notorious and beautiful star (Nicole Kidman).

The Holdovers
2023

The holdovers follow a curmudgeonly instructor (Paul Giamatti) at a New England prep school who is forced to remain on campus during Christmas break to babysit the handful of students with nowhere to go. Eventually he forms an unlikely bond with one of them - a damaged, brainy troublemaker (Dominic Sessa) - and with the school’s head cook (Da’vine Joy Randolph) who has just lost a son in Vietnam.

A New York psychiatrist (Barbra Streisand) treating an emotionally scarred woman (Blythe Danner) finds it helpful to discuss her South Carolina family’s troubled history with the woman’s twin brother (Nick Nolte). He and the psychiatrist find themselves drawn together by their equally turbulent pasts, and they form an alliance which ultimately leads to romance.

1994

Socially awkward Muriel Heslop (Toni Collectte) wants nothing more than to get married. Unfortunately, due to her oppressive politician father (Bill Hunter), Muriel has never even been on a date. Ostracized by her more socially adept friends, Muriel runs into fellow outcast Rhonda Epinstalk (Rachel Griffiths), and the two move from their small Australian town to the big city of Sydney, where Muriel changes her name and begins the arduous task of redesigning her life to match her fantasies.

Elvis follows the story of infamous rock’n’roll star Elvis Presley (Austin Butler) seen through the eyes of his controversial manager Colonel Tom Parker (Tom Hanks). The film explores Elvis Presley’s highs and lows and the many challenges and controversies he revived throughout his career.

All The Presidents Men
1976

Two green reporters and rivals working for the Washington Post, Bob Woodward (Robert Redford) and Cal Bernstein (Dustin Hoffman) research the botched 1972 burglary of the Democratic Party Headquarters at the Watergate apartment complex. With the help of a mysterious source, code named Deep Throat (Hal Holbrook), the two reporters make a connection between the burglars and a White House staffer. Despite dire warnings about their safety, the duo follow the money all the way to the top.
